Research
for the History Portion Takes Fishing Enthusiast Around the World
Our Trout Fly of the Month might take us to England one month and
Wisconsin the next. Our Saltwater Lure of the Month has us in Florida
talking with the inventor of the MirroLure. San Francisco
for the Saltwater Fly of the Month, Norway for the Freshwater Lure
of the Month. Every installment brings a new location, a new and
interesting story about our premium tackle selections.
"One
of the best gift ideas I've ever seen," Lloyd
Daugherty
That's high praise coming from the host of a radio show-The
Dixie Angler Radio Network-with weekly listeners in 200 markets.
We can assure you that you and your recipient will not be disappointed,
and the History Portion found in each shipment will play a significant
role in setting this gift apart.
The
history portion is found in our monthly shipments of our Fly of
the Month and Lure of the Month gift subscriptions, and it's part
of what makes a FE subscription so unique and memorable.
Once we select the tackle for our subscriptions, we set about researching
the story behind each lure or fly. The information we discover is
then printed on fine writing paper and made complete by the addition
of our trademark translucent overlay.
Here's
our latest History Portion sample,

McMurray
Ant
After
Art Lee mentioned my fly in Field & Stream, demand went
wild,
Ed Sutryn
Ed
Sutryn invented the McMurray Ant in the early 1960s.
It was while fishing on a stream in McMurray, Pennsylvania
that Sutryn watched a frenzied school of trout feast on what
he later discovered to be timber ants tumbling down from the
leaves of an oak tree. Inspired by the feeding trout, Sutryn
quickly set about tying his own ant imitation. After a departure
from fly tying practices of the day, one that would earn him
a patent on his design, Sutryn fabricated a prototype using
monofilament, cork, and black hackle. The first few flies
were dipped in India Ink to create their black color. To this
day Strain mindfully protects the materials, the process,
and the details concerning the equipment he uses to manufacture
his unique fly.
The
prototype proved to be highly successful and Sutryn began
selling his fly to local fly shops and to those who wrote
to him with small orders. Interest in his terrestrial ignited
when Art Lee wrote about the pattern in Field & Stream.
Shortly after the article was published, Sutryn told us that
the demand for the fly went wild. Sutryn recalls
receiving as many as one hundred orders a day. Over the course
of nearly 40 years he has sold flies to individuals and fly
shops around the world.
Today,
Sutryn supplies his special ant bodies to the Otto Beck Company,
the only fly manufacturer authorized by Sutryn to tie his
design. At 82 years old, Sutryn lives near the stream where
his McMurray Ant first hit the waters surface.
For years the McMurray Ant in size 14 was the only
fly Sutryn would fish. It was the only fly I needed,
he told us. Indeed.

Special Note from Fishing Enthusiast:
The flies enclosed were constructed using Ed Sutryns
own handmade ant bodies. Because we so rarely obtain flies
that have passed though the hands of their creator, we are
recommending that our recipients consider setting aside one
or more of these wonderful flies.
